Restoring the Black Press, Page by Page

The condition of the record

Most surviving copies of the historic Black press exist only as microfilm shot decades ago, often from newsprint that was already brittle. Contrast is uneven. Gutters swallow columns. Whole paragraphs dissolve into grain.

The restoration pass

  • De-skew and de-warp so column rules run straight.
  • Local contrast recovery rather than a global curve, which crushes faint type.
  • Human transcription of any line the software guesses at. Guessing is how history gets rewritten.

Why it matters

These pages carry obituaries, business listings, church notices, editorials written under threat. They are the only place many families appear in the written record at all.

Restoration is not decoration. It is the difference between a family that can be traced and one that cannot.
