Reading a Lineage You Were Not Handed
For those raised outside a tradition: how to study seriously, without cosplay and without shame.

The common position
Most people who write to me were not raised inside a lineage. They found it as adults, through a book, a funeral, or a question no one in the family would answer.
Study before performance
Read the primary sources before you buy the objects. Learn the language of the tradition — even a hundred words. Find out who is still alive and teaching, and what they ask of students.
Two failure modes
- Cosplay: collecting the aesthetics without the obligations.
- Shame: deciding you are too far outside to begin at all.
Both end the same way — no practice. The middle road is slow, literate, and accountable to someone real.
Begin as a student. Stay one longer than feels necessary.
